Immune Priming: Mothering Males Modulate Immunity
نویسندگان
چکیده
The transfer of immunity from mother to offspring is widespread in animals. The father's contribution to this is usually negligible. However, in a sex-role reversed pipefish where fathers do the mothering, fathers make an important immune priming contribution, too.

GM-CSF and IL-3 Modulate Human Monocyte TNF-α Production and Renewal in In Vitro Models of Trained Immunity
GM-CSF and IL-3 are hematopoietic cytokines that also modulate the effector functions of several immune cell subsets. In particular, GM-CSF and IL-3 exert a significant control on monocyte and macrophage effector functions, as assessed in experimental models of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and also in human studies. Here, we sought to investigate the mechanisms and the extent to which G...
متن کاملBacterial Exposure at the Larval Stage Induced Sexual Immune Dimorphism and Priming in Adult Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes
Gender differences in the immune response of insects are driven by natural selection for females and sexual selection for males. These natural forces entail a multitude of extrinsic and intrinsic factors involved in a genotype-environment interaction that results in sex-biased expression of the genes shared by males and females. However, little is known about how an infection at a particular on...
متن کاملDifferential expression and costs between maternally and paternally derived immune priming for offspring in an insect.
1. When parasitized, both vertebrates and invertebrates can enhance the immune defence of their offspring, although this transfer of immunity is achieved by different mechanisms. In some insects, immune-challenged males can also initiate trans-generational immune priming (TGIP), but its expressions appear qualitatively different from the one induced by females similarly challenged. 2. The exist...
متن کاملIntravenous immunoglobulins suppress T-cell priming by modulating the bidirectional interaction between dendritic cells and natural killer cells.
The modes of action of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIgs) in exerting their immunomodulatory properties are broad and not fully understood. IVIgs can modulate the function of various immune cells, including suppressing the capacity of dendritic cells (DCs) to stimulate T cells. In the present study, we showed that DCs matured in the presence of IVIgs (IVIg-DCs) activated NK cells, and increase...
متن کاملModulation of APC Function and Anti-Tumor Immunity by Anti-Cancer Drugs
Professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs), such as dendritic cells (DCs), are central to the initiation and regulation of anti-cancer immunity. However, in the immunosuppressive environment within a tumor APCs may antagonize anti-tumor immunity by inducing regulatory T cells (Tregs) or anergy of effector T cells due to lack of efficient costimulation. Hence, in an optimal setting, anti-cance...
